Dr

Clare Newbolt

Born in London in 1956. She attended Camberwell School of Art & Crafts (1973-1977) before living and painting in Italy for a year and in the USA for two years. In 2002 she had a three month residency at the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation, Connecticut, USA. Clare has illustrated cookery and children's books, exhibited textiles and painted postcards in Japan, and drawings and paintings in London and the USA. Her 'Colour Notes for Children' was published in 2006. In 2012 she was awarded a Doctoral Degree from the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts 2012 entitled 'Art is the Imitation of Nature in Her Manner of Operation’ where she studied under Professor Keith Critchlow. She has taught drawing and painting in schools to children of all ages, as well as to adults at the Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts, the Royal Drawing School, and from her studio in Cambridge. As a painter, experience has taught her that each artist has their small amount of territory: their small talent gives them a deeply felt relationship with an aspect of Nature. In drawing the struggle to prove this has very little to do with copying what is seen. A better image to describe the artistic effort is losing of oneself in the subject and of the subject in oneself so that these two become one. The more intimate and confiding the drawing of the space the more magical the effect. @clarenewbolt_studio

FAQ

  • Is this course for me?

This drawing course is for all levels. It does not matter if you do not have any previous experience!

  • What am I going to learn?

You will be introduced to the inherent nature of the materials and becoming more familiar with the Western and Eastern cultures, cross-cultural influences and how we perceive them. Hand-eye coordination, understanding the pencil or the brush as an extension of your fingers and therefore, the sense of 'touch' too. Calligraphic thickness and thinness of line, the importance of the sheet of paper and how a sense of rhythm, colour and tonal harmony can come about across these different cultures. The nature of handmade paper.

  • What am I going to do?

You will make drawings from a wide range of images which will include prints, drawings, paintings, sculpture and ceramics. Looking at carefully selected art objects during this course will allow for a more profound understanding of the form and the quality of the line.

  • How am I going to do it?

Through the process of drawing on a sheet of paper — it is hoped that you will experience on more than one level the qualities of the art object and materials used. Developing ways of expressing your inner thoughts and feelings in the marks or strokes made. It is also hoped that you will develop your ability to focus, to broaden your drawing techniques and with the aim of giving you a richer visual vocabulary. We will discuss and experiment with an assortment of materials and how and why they belong to specific traditions. We shall be looking at art from all corners of the globe. You will start to question the work of art, its function and purpose, its contextual and universal relevance - the symbolic - and choose to draw those elements which resonate most strongly in you. The pencil mark or the brush stroke on the paper is primal and sacred.

  • I am not an English native speaker. Do I need a high level of English to take this course?

No. The language the tutor will use during the sessions will not be complicated and the course administrator (who also speaks Spanish) will assist you both during and outside of the sessions if you have any questions.

  • How will the sessions be?

Each session will be on Saturdays with a duration of 3 hours and they will take place through Zoom. The course administrator will send you the link in advance each week. All sessions will be recorded and uploaded into Thinkific so if you miss a session, you can catch it up.

  • Do I need any special materials for this course?

The course administrator will send you the list of materials before the start of the course but it will not be anything too fancy or difficult to find in any art shop or Amazon.

  • Does the course contemplate post-session work?

Yes. You will have weekly assignments that we expect you to upload in Thinkific so the tutor can comment on them before the following session.

  • If I have any other questions?

Please do not hesitate to contact Gabriela Castillo, course administrator, via e-mail:[email protected] or WhatsApp: +(52) 55 1844-9628.
